DATA & METHODOLOGY

Every relationship needs a source.

Linerbase is an independent catalogue. The sources below document where our data comes from; their inclusion does not imply a partnership, affiliation or endorsement.

MusicBrainz

Label names, identifiers, aliases, territories, company types, dates and official links come from the complete MusicBrainz label JSON dump. Core data is available under CC0. User tags, ratings and annotations are not imported.

Release editions and their artist credits are also imported from official MusicBrainz JSON dumps, using exact label identifiers. Editions retain their own identifiers and are not merged with release groups or similarly named releases from other sources. Unsupported source records are held for review rather than filled with guessed facts.

MusicBrainz source notes can also explicitly describe a label's musical style. Clear descriptions such as “UK techno label” are normalized into genre filters; ambiguous descriptions are left for review. These associations can be historical and do not establish a label's current activity or exclusive musical focus.

Wikidata

Structured CC0 statements supply additional labels, genres, identifiers and release relationships. Matching uses identifiers; identical names alone do not establish identity. Conflicting identifiers are held for review.

Genres shown beside a release come from explicit statements about that release. They are not automatically assigned to its label or artists. Qualified statements, unverified genre terms and missing readable genre names are held for review. Each displayed release genre links to its source statements.

Enrichment through Wikidata's Discogs label identifier (P1955) links existing catalogue identities only. This identifier alone does not create a new record.

Discogs

Official XML data dumps provide CC0 catalogue names, identifiers and source-listed links. The label dataset also includes producers, manufacturers, distributors and other companies; a record is not automatically classified as an active record label. Untyped external links are shown as public links, not asserted to be official websites. Images, marketplace data and user accounts are not imported.

First-party editorial checks

A small number of factual genre and website corrections are checked against official label pages. Their source links are recorded alongside the fields. Website text and images are not reproduced, and the websites are not described as CC0 datasets.

How to read a profile

A release credit documents an association with a particular release. It does not mean that an artist is currently signed to a label. Release lists are partial source collections, not complete discographies or a list of the latest releases. Dates and countries reflect source metadata and can be incomplete.

Label and company parent relationships require an explicit parent link in a verified Discogs XML dump and exact identifier evidence. Both entities remain separate. These links describe the source snapshot, do not establish current ownership and do not transfer genres or artists between records. Larger lists are split into pages; the total counts distinct linked catalogue entries, not the number of evidence records.

Direct artist-to-label statements are shown separately from release credits. Their source may describe a past association; an absent end date does not mean a current contract. Supplied dates retain their original precision. Artist genres are not copied to the label.

The genre filter includes sourced musical genres and selected reviewed audio or performance categories, such as spoken word, soundtrack, choir and handbell. These broader categories are not presented as formal musical genres. Some inherited values remain under review. An artist's genre is not automatically assigned to every associated label. A source link is evidence of provenance, not a guarantee that a fact is current.

Publication and corrections

Search includes incomplete records. Search engine indexing requires separate editorial approval and sufficient content. The presence of a label does not establish that it is active or accepts demos. Submission information is shown only when a source and review date have been recorded.

Source corrections can be submitted through the linked MusicBrainz, Wikidata or Discogs entity pages. For catalogue corrections, contact hello@linerbase.com and include the catalogue page and supporting source.
